How can I create a flower garden if I have limited space?

Even if your growing space is very limited, or you don't want a full flower garden, you can still enjoy colorful splashes of colors by growing your plants in containers.

Unique containers will make your little mini-garden even more fun. Flower pots range from simple clay or plastic to ornately designed container, but you can also get a little creative and use buckets, window planters, large cans, washtubs, watering cans, bushel baskets, old boots, or treasures found at antique shops and garage sales. Anything that can hold soil and drain well can be a container.

Space may be limited, but options are not:

Space savers

Plants that take up little space include succulents, pansies, marigolds and asters. Keep light requirements in mind, however. Just because they're little doesn't mean they don't need full sun.

Perfect potters

These are known for being perfect container plants. Try such annuals as petunias, sweet peas, begonias, dusty miller, fuchsia, lobelia, moss rose, snapdragons, statice and alyssum. Some of the best perennials include coreopsis and dianthus. Don't forget foliage plants such as caladiums, cannas and elephant ears.

Grow up

Expand your growing space by growing vertically with the help of trellises. Trumpet vine - loved by both hummingbirds and butterflies - morning glories and clematis require support to climb, but they won't take up much of your space. These need full sun.
