5 Tips To Keep Your Plants Healthy In the Heat

As that old 80’s song goes, “The heat is on!” Aside from keeping yourself from overheating when you spend time in your outdoor oasis, the next concern you may have is keeping those plants, flowers and vegetables thriving in the current exhausting conditions. Direct sun, high temperatures and humidity, along with a drawback in seasonal rainfall makes survival tough for your favorite flora. Here’s five quick tips to keep them as healthy as possible until lower temperatures arrive.

Tips to Keep Plants Healthy In Heat

  • Maintain a regular watering schedule. Morning is the best time to water or mid-evening before the sun goes down.
  • Water the soil deeply at least once a week (vegetable plants a couple times a week); not the leaves. It helps the roots get more established. Saturate the soil at least a good 12 inches.
  • Don’t overwater. A plant may wilt from the sun and heat, but still have enough moisture.
  • Avoid water in the heat of the day. Extreme heat can turn into magnifying glasses on the leaves and intensify the heat. You can spray them down after the sun sets.
  • Refrain from removing damaged foliage and pruning. The foliage can help protect from further damage. Continuous pruning can add stress to the plant.
