Cultivate KC Partnership Story

Westlake Ace Hardware proudly partners with Cultivate KC

Westlake is a proud supporter of Cultivate KC and recently invited one of its farmers, Zar Zar Khaing, to set-up a Pop-Up Farmer’s Market at its Prairie Village, Kan. Westlake Ace Hardware location in July. The event provided an opportunity for customers to purchase locally grown produce and herbs and learn more about Cultivate KC.

Cultivate KC is a locally-grown nonprofit organization working to grow food, farms and communities in support of a sustainable and healthy local food system for all. Its vision is to create viable farm and food businesses across the region, providing local food access for all and integrating food into the civic life of the community.

In partnership with Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, Cultivate KC manages the New Roots for Refugees program, which is a 4-year program. It trains refugees with agricultural experience to become independent farmers. The goal for farmers in the program is to learn how to successfully grow in the Kansas City region and to acquire the marketing skills and confidence to become independent small business owners.

Khaing is part of the New Roots for Refugees program. She is from Burma and had experience growing vegetables on a half-acre plot of land back in her home country. She moved to the U.S. in 2016.

In conjunction with the Pop-up Farmer’s Market, Westlake hosted its monthly Backyard BBQ Grill Demo the same day. Associates grilled vegetables, grown by Khaing, that customers could sample which showcased fresh, local produce as well as its expansive line of Weber grills.
