How do I select the right grass seed?

  • Determine how you use your yard. If your lawn gets a lot of foot traffic, you'll need to plant a type of grass that recovers from damage quickly. If your lawn is mainly ornamental, you can plant a less hardy variety of grass.
  • Decide how much maintenance you are willing to do. Some types of grass require more mowing, fertilizing and watering than others.
  • Choose a grass that can handle the growing conditions in your yard. Note how much water and sun your yard gets. Most yards include both sunny and shady areas, so you may need to plant more than one type of grass.
  • Write down all of the information about your yard and take it with you when you go to the store. Read the grass seed labels carefully to choose the best grass seed for your yard and lifestyle and ask a store associate for advice.
